Summary:Israeli tanks and troops poured back into Israel across the border with Lebanon on August 1 and tens of thousands of Lebanese refugees returned to their devastated villages in south Lebanon, following Israel's decision to end a seven-day offensive. Israel said the army had halted Operation Accountability because US - brokered understanding met its goals, including an end to guerrillas firing Katyusha rockets at northern Israel. Israel's offensive, launched after the killing of seven Israeli soldiers in July, killed more than 130 people, mainly civilians, wounded 525 and drove some 250,000 people from their homes. In the Hizbollah stronghold of Jibsheet senior Hizbollah official Sheikh Ahmed Taleb said they would continue to fight Israel no matter what happened.
