Summary:Nigerian labour unions began an indefinite nationwide pro-democracy strike on August 28 after the installation of an unelected interim government. The trade union organisation, the Nigeria Labour Congress, which claimed a membership of 3.5 million, issued its formal strike call on August 27. The country's biggest oilworkers union, NUPENG, took early action in Lagos and began the strike, disrupting crude oil exports. NUPENG, which had 50,000 members, wanted millionaire publishing tycoon Moshood Abiola installed as president. Abiola, widely believed to have won the June 12 presidential election annulled by Babangida, had threatened to return and set up a rival government.
