- Story Text: The 2007 Africa Motocross Union Championships (AMU) was held over the weekend (August 18-19) in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital. There were 89 contestants from the seven African countries Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania and Angola.
There were six competition categories: the 50, 65, 85-junior, 85-senior and the open horsepower events.
Kenya finished first with 450 points, followed by Zimbabwe with South Africa in third place. Kenya finished third last year in at the championships in Zambia.
Maina Muturi, the chairman of the Kenya Motocross Association wants to see more african representatives at the World Motocross Championships: "It's really Africa against Africa riders competing, improving their skills. And we expect out of these we can be able to send some of our riders from Africa. South Africa is already doing that for MX1 and MX2 World Motocross Championships and also to try and develop - youth development in a disciplined motor event," he said.
The crowd of spectators that turned up to cheer on their favourite riders was a testament to the growing popularity of the sport in Africa.
"It was a good event, at least it was organised up to international standards and that's all," said Sheila Gathoni Ngatia.
"It was fantastic very many people came and it was really fun," added Beverly Mwenda.
