Summary:Chief UN peacekeeper Yasushi Akashi left Cambodia on September 26, bringing an end to the largest ever UN peace-keeping operation. Nineteen months earlier, Akashi had arrived promising to help heal the wounds of more than two decades of Khmer Rouge genocide and civil war. The 22,000-strong UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia was deployed to oversee the May elections and supervise the running of the country until a new government was formed. On September 24 Prince Norodom Sihanouk returned to the throne as King after signing into law a new constitution. On September 25 Royalist party chief Prince Norodom Ranariddh and Chea Sim, leader of the Cambodian People's Party, the political wing of the former Hanoi-installed regime, signed an agreement pledging co-operation and mutual understanding.
