Summary:More than 90 per cent of Azerbaijan's electorate voted on August 29 in a referendum on the political future of fugitive President Abulfez Elcibey. Exit polls before the official result suggested Elcibey had lost support and would be rejected in favour of the acting president Heydar Aliyev, a former Soviet Politburo member. Even supporters of Elcibey's Popular Front movement who refused to vote said they had lost faith in the official president.Later Heydar Aliyev was elected President and sworn in on October 10 1993.
