Summary:Nelson Mandela's ANC won South Africa's historic first all-race elections with 62.65 percent, the body monitoring the historic poll announced on May 6. The Independent Electoral Commission said outgoing white President F.W. de Klerk's National Party got 20.39 per cent and Inkatha Freedom Party of Mangosuthu Buthelezi 10.54 percent. IEC chairman Judge Johann Kriegler, said that the elections, had been free and fair. The ANC majority was short of the two-thirds that would allow it to rewrite the constitution and shape the new South Africa unfettered by its partners in the national unity government that will run the country for the next five years.
