- Title: United Kingdom: Commemoration SerVices For Those Who Died In The D-Day Landings
- Date: 6th June 1994
- Summary: Thousands of people joined world leaders and veterans for a remembrance service on Sunday June 5 for those who took part in the Allied landings on Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944. Security was tight as Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister John Major, President Bill Clinton and heads of state of 12 other countries attended the event at Southsea Common facing the seas where the invasion fleet set sail. The Princess of Wales, the Queen Mother, the Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Anne and Princess Margaret also took part. The 40-minute - Drumhead Service - was modelled on the British military tradition of field ceremonies held around battle drums used as an altar. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey led the ecumenical service. Along the seafront hundreds stood to watch as warships left Portsmouth to join a fleet of ships which was later reviewed by the Queen and leaders of the allied nations aboard the royal yacht Britannia. Following the review the flotilla sailed on to the English channel to meet another 60 major vessels, before travelling on to Normandy, site of the Allied landings. Overhead a number of vintage warplanes and current aircraft took part in a spectacular fly-past. The first aircraft to be seen was a Fleet Air Arm Swordfish closely followed by a Lancaster, two Hurricanes and a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The old biplanes headed a 20-mile column of 150 aircraft from the Allied nations.WARNING:LOCAL MUSIC LICENCES MAY APPLY.Copyright laws covering the composition, arrangement and/or performance of music differ from country to country, and even from state to state within some countries. These range from limiting the law to specific circumstances - e.g. 'performances given by professionals to a paying audience' - to total coverage that encompasses everything from a professional performance to the most amateur rendition - e.g. 'spectators at sports events'. If in doubt we recommend that either the section containing 'Music' is deleted or that the sound level is turned down and covered with commentary.
