Summary:PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat arrived in the Palestinian-ruled Gaza Strip on July 12 to take up residence. Cementing the peace deal struck with Israel in 1993, Arafat celebrated his first homecoming in Gaza and the West Bank town of Jericho earlier this month when he formally established self- rule. In Jerusalem, Shimon Peres said Arafat's most pressing problem was the economy of the self-rule areas. The economy in Gaza and the other parts of the territories needs a review and special effort to introduce more life and more hope and more investment there, he said. Peres said he thought the people of Gaza were entitled to expect the help of the international community. He added that Israel was willing to participate in such a special effort.
