Summary:Belarussian leader Alexander Lukashenka and other officials laid wreaths at the Victory memorial in the centre of Minsk on July 27 to mark his country's independence from the former Soviet Union on July 27, 1990. Lukashenko, who took power earlier that month, urged his country to strengthen its national identity as it reflected on 4 years of independence. While in Victory Square Lukashenka visited a demonstration by the opposition Popular Front.
