- Title: Jordan: King Hussein Replaces Prime Minister
- Date: 1st August 1994
- Summary: King Hussein of Jordan has dismissed Prime Minister Abdul-Karim al-Kabariti and replaced him with 71-year-old Abdul-Salam al-Majali, a former premier who signed Jordan's 1994 peace treaty with Israel. The decision to replace Kabariti was announced after a special cabinet session on March 19.Kabariti gave no reason for his sudden removal, but he suggested it was connected to a recent flare-up of tensions with Israel. "Events and the changes, either locally or regionally, always take us by surprise and this is Jordan's fate to be always in the centre of events and storms," he said before heading for the royal palace. A Jordanian soldier shot dead seven Israeli schoolgirls last week after Jordan warned Israel that its plans to build a Jewish settlement in Arab East Jerusalem could provoke violence. King Hussein visited the site of the attack and consoled the Israeli families of the victims in Jerusalem but Kabariti, who was also defence and foreign minister, stayed away both times. Some observers said Kabariti was unhappy at the king's decision to meet Netanyahu in Jerusalem, just one week after he rebuked him for pushing the Middle East "towards the abyss of bloodshed.".Majali, who as prime minister from 1993 to 1995 also oversaw Jordan's first multi-party elections for decades, is reported to have already started picking a new cabinet to lead Jordan into scheduled November elections. The king's replacement of Kabariti, 47, with Majali marks not only a return to an earlier generation of premiers but a change in the style of leadership. Kabarati's government was characterised by his desire to keep decision-making within a close inner circle of ministers. While Majali is expected to keep a tight reign on policy making, he is also likely to delegate some of the day-to-day running of government. NOTE: Date is approximate.
