Summary:Fighting on the Eastern Front was much more fluid than in the West, a series of campaigns rather than a stalemate of entrenched positions. A Russian attack in 1916 drew German troops away from the Somme and Verdun. But the Russians were seriously shot of modern equipment and transport and suffered the heaviest losses of any of the belligerents, over nine million killed, wounded or captured.
