Title:Sweden: Survivors Of Estonia Ferry Sinking Describe Experiences
Date:28th September 1994
Summary:Survivors of one of the biggest maritime disasters this century described their experiences as they arrived in Stockholm aboard a rescue ferry on September 28. The ferry Estonia sank with the loss of more than 800 lives off the coast of Finland as it sailed from Tallinn to Stockholm. The survivors spoke of their rush to escape as the ship sank without warning. American Scott Macdonald, among 20 survivors rescued by the Swedish ferry Mariella, expressed amazement at the speed with which the ship had gone down. Coast- guards resumed their air-and-sea search on September 29, but rescuers said they held out little hope of finding anyone else alive after 141 survivors were pulled from the cold Baltic Sea.
