- Title: USA: Nureyev's Art Collection Auctioned
- Date: 13th January 1995
- Summary: A record-breaking 4.4 million US dollars was netted at Christie's in New York City on Friday, January 13 for Old Masters' paintings collected by the late ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev. The top bid of 772,500 US dollars went for Reynold's portrait of George Townsend. The second highest bid was the 761,500 U.S. dollars for Johann Heinrich Fuseli's Satan Starting from the Touch of Ithuriel's Lance. Nureyev's Elizabethan oak and marquetry canopy bedstead, estimated at 15,000 to 20,000 U.S. dollars, brought 255,500 U.S. dollars, probably the most ever paid for a bed. Money from the sales is to go to a foundation, established a year before the Russian-born Nureyev's death in 1993, which hopes to provide 500,000 U.S. dollars annually for scholarships to the School of American Ballet in New York.
