Title:Japan: Fires Break Out In City Of Kobe After Earthquake
Date:19th January 1995
Summary:The death toll from one of the most destructive earthquakes to hit Japan this century reached more than 3,500 on Thursday, January 19 1995, as new fires broke out in the devastated city of Kobe. Authorities said the fires erupted in several places as troops toiled through the rubble in search of over 600 people still missing more than 48 hours after the earthquake. Whole blocks of buildings were laid waste as blackened ruins and buckled roads evoked memories of the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Seismologists recorded 790 after- shocks by Thursday afternoon. More troops were rushing into the stricken city for the task of digging out more bodies from the rubble. At least 9,500 troops had joined relief efforts by Thursday morning.
