- Title: France-Germany: Floodwaters Continue To Wreak Havoc Across Europe
- Date: 1st February 1995
- Summary: Floodwaters continued to wreak havoc across vast areas of Europe on Wednesday, February 1 1995. In Germany, the government pledged 30 million marks (20 million United States dollars) to back low-interest loans for flood victims. Residents, meanwhile, began the huge job of cleaning up in Koblenz where the Rhine meets the Mosel River. In northern France, floodwaters receded slowly and the government began considering how to avert a repeat of the disaster that has killed 16 people and forced 6,000 from their homes. In some towns, police were patrolling in boats to prevent robberies. Releasing figures for the disaster, officials said 16 people had been killed, 18 injured and 4 were missing. Altogether 40,000 homes have been hit by the disaster and 6,000 people evacuated. About 240,000 people are without drinking water and more than 9,000 have been forced to stop their jobs.
