- Story Text: General Francisco Franco, Spain's 81-year-old leader, left hospital on Tuesday (30 July) after treatment for a circulatory ailment.
Doctors reported he had fully recovered from a relapse 11 days ago in which he vomited blood from a lesion in the digestive tract.
He went into hospital three weeks ago suffering from phlebitis -- inflamation of the walls of the vein -- in the thigh.
Today he left the hospital and steped into his waiting limousine with a wave to thousands of cheering bystanders.
During his relapse, General Franco appointed his heir apparent, Prince Juan Carlos of Bourbon, acting Chief of State.
The question was whether he would take back the reins of power or retire and so pave the way for the prince to be proclaimed king of Spain.
