Summary:In 1916 the great French forts at Verdun withstood seven months of German assaults. Each side lost more than three-hundred-thousand men. The Battle of the Somme - the offensive to relive pressure on Verdun - began with a week's artillery bombardment. Nonetheless, the British lost sixty-thousand men in one day in this battle - and before it ended in torrential autumn rains four months later, casualties on both side were over a million.
