- Story Text: AIN AL-HILWEH REFUGEE CAMP & MAGHDOUSHEH, NEAR SIDON, LEBANON
Rocket fire shook the hill-top village of Maghdousheh, close to the southern port of Sidon, on December 1, as Palestinians and Shi'ite Moslems fought for the seventh day running. Sporadic exchanges of gunfire and explosions from rocket-propelled grenades were heard as the two sides battled to reinforce their positions on the strategic ridge, overlooking Ain al-Hilweh, Lebanon's biggest refugee cam, and a key coastal road. Heavily-armed Palestinians guerrillas, with ammunition belts and scarves with the colours of the Palestinians flag, ran through the village under fire as residents cowered in hallways and basements. The takeover of maghdousheh a week earlier had been the first major Palestinians attack in Lebanon since the bulk of their forces left the country in the wake of the 1982 Israeli invasion. Since the first surge into the village, more than 200 people have been killed and control of Maghdousheh has changed hands at least twice. Schools and shops in the port were shut and there was little traffic on the normally busy streets as local people protested against the continuing "camps war". A proposed nine-point ceasefire agreement, mediated by Syrian, Iranian and Libyan officials, has so far failed to materialise despite continuing peace talks in Damascus.
