Summary:Before 1917, Russia was a monarchy ruled by the Imperial Tsar. The revolutionary movement had been gained strength for several years and was only intensified by the suffering of the Russian people during World War I. Famine, poverty and deprivation were a way of life for millions. The Tsar was forced to abdicate in March 1917. He was replaced by a government of liberals and moderate revolutionaries, the Mensheviks. This government survived only eight months before falling to the Bolsheviks. NOTE: Date is approximate.
