- Summary: People all around the world on August 15 celebrated the 50th anniversary of Japan's defeat in World War Two which ended the conflict in the Pacific. In the Chinese city of Tianjin, two black marble walls bearing the names of 6,723 Chinese workers who died in forced labour camps in Japan during World War Two were unveiled. Takako Doi, speaker of the Japanese house of representatives, laid a wreath at the monument. About a hundred people from China and Japan attended the unveiling ceremony. In New York City, the UN also joined the commemorations. The president of the UN Security Council Nugroho Wisnumurti of Indonesia, paid tribute to those who had sacrificed their lives for peace during the Second World War. At the end of the address, he asked the UN delegates to observe a minute of silence.In Britain, more than a quarter of a million balloons were released over the seaside town of Portsmouth, each one marking a British life lost during World War Two. Many British soldiers fought in the Pacific region and were among the 52,000 Allied soldiers taken prisoner by the Japanese during World War Two.
