- Story Text: The Czech capital is hosting the tenth annual World Roma Festival, Khamoro with almost 100 artists from eight different countries represented.
The festival programme, which kicks off with a lively procession through Prague's old town, includes presentations by Roma dance troupes and musicians from around the world. There will also be exhibitions, theatre performances and film screenings.
Barbora Subrtova is one of this year's festival organisers, whose aim was to bring as great a variety of performances as possible to the city.
"This year we succeeded in bringing the best music bands and dancing groups here. People can enjoy performances of Queen Esma Rechepa or Ferus from Macedonia or the marvellous Loiko from Russia or Roma from Ukraine," she said.
To celebrate achieving ten years of celebrating Roma culture, the organisers aimed to bring together the best Roma artists, who have performed in the Czech Republic in the last ten years. For some participants it is a matter of pride to attend, for others a chance to dance and have fun.
"Prague is hosting this global Roma festival and it is a feast for us to take part in it. We are proud of this great festival of Roma art,"
said the head of the "Ciganski Teatr Roma" from Kiev, Ukraine, Igor Krikunov.
"The festival amuses us, we just want to dance," said a Czech dancer.
The Spanish Puerto Flamenco Group was in the Czech Republic for the festival last year and has come again to display its techniques.
The closing gala concert will be staged on Saturday (May 31) where all groups from the previous days will appear. This four-hour concert will show the very best of Roma and Balkan music accompanied by special stage management and lights. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
