Summary:Some 25,000 Allied veterans went on parade on the streets of London on August 19 to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of World War Two. In a surprise move, they were joined by the Duke of Edinburgh, who left the Queen's side to march smartly alongside his fellow veterans. The duke was a first lieutenant aboard HMS Whelp in the Pacific and was present with the Fleet at the surrender of the Japanese.
