Australian Mark Richards won the final of the Gunston International Surfing Championships held at Durban's Bay of Plenty on July 4. Richards, the reigning world champion was competing against many of the world's top surfers for the second highest prize money in the international calendar; 7,500 rand (8,550 dollars). Fellow-finals held in two-metre (6 foot) high surf on July 3 produced a number of upsets. Three of the favourites -last year's winner Cheyne Horan of Australia and South Africans Martin Potter and Shaun Thompson - were eliminated. Even more surprising, two unseeded South Africans, Mike Savage and Dave Hansen knocked out many of the big names to reach the semi-finals Savage and Hansen were however outsurfed in the semi-finals by the more experienced Australians. Mark Richards is the only surfer to have taken the world professional title two years in succession in 1979 and 1980.
