- Story Text: At least 40 people have died and 30 have been injured
in El Salvador when a bus plunged into a ravine.
At least 40 people died and 30 were injured on Monday
(October 11) in El Salvador when a bus plunged into a ravine,
police and rescue workers said.
A police spokesman had reported 30 dead and 45 injured
earlier on Monday (October 11), the National Rescue Service
told reporters at least 10 of the injured passengers died
before receiving hospital treatment.
The driver and a 2-year-old girl were reported to be among
the dead.
Journalists at the scene reported the ravine, about 100
feet (30 metres) deep, was littered with scraps of metal from
the bus and the bodies of victims.
Police had not determined the cause of the accident, which
occurred about 11 a.m.EDT (1500 GMT) on the outskirts of the
capital city San Salvador.
Authorities said the bus was going too fast and jockeying
for position with another bus.
"He was coming fast," said Jose Flores a survivor of the
crash.
Monday's crashed followed another last week in the north
of this impoverished Central American country in which seven
people were killed at 25 injured.
Officials announced following that tragedy that the
government would impose stricter safety standards on bus
travel.
