  • Story Text: INTRO: The mother of the Peruvian guerrilla leader killed in the storming of the Japanese embassy in Lima has spoken out about her son's death.

    The mother of Peruvian guerrilla leader Nestor Cerpa Cartolini spoke on Wednesday (April 23) of her grief and anger at her son's death.

    Felicia Cartolini was speaking from the family home in Nantes, France, a day after Peruvian commandos stormed the besieged Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima in a surprise assault and rescued 71 hostages.

    One hostage -- a Peruvian Supreme Court judge -- and two commandos died and all 14 Marxist rebels were killed in Tuesday's (April 22) assault. Four of the rebels had apparently tried to surrender.

    "I thought there would be a peaceful solution, in fact (Peruvian President Alberto) Fujimoro was lying to the international press and world," Felicia Carolini said.

    "That's why I am really indignant that he has been assassinated with cruelty." Cartolini's mother was surrounded by her family, who lit candles in tribute to their slain relative.

    Nestor's son, who is also named Nestor, cried as he looked at a framed photograph of his father.
