Summary:Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels killed five soldiers on October 7 in an attack on a foot patrol at Mullaitivu in the north-east as the army was consolidating its positions in newly captured areas in the rebel-held northern Jaffna peninsula. Famous for the cyanide capsules they wear around their necks to be taken if captured, the Tigers have been fighting since 1983 in a war which has cost more than 50,000 lives.
