- Story Text: Bodies of the pilots and cabine crew of the Air Algerie
flight that crashed in the Sahara desert on Thursday have
arrived back in Algiers.
Family of the victims were waiting at the airport,
and have taken the bodies with them to organise funerals.
The bodies of the passengers haven't been brought back
yet, as they are still being identified.
The plane had been heading for Algiers on the
Mediterranean coast in the north and was due to make a stop
over at Ghardaia, 470 km (290 miles) south of the capital.
It crashed near Tamanrasset in the middle of the Sahara in
the far south of Algeria, 1,920 km (1,200 miles) from Algiers.
The area, noted for its prehistoric cave paintings,
attracts limited tourism, mainly from France and Germany,
despite an Islamic insurgency which has racked Algeria for the
past decade.
In January, an unarmed man under the influence of
drugs tried to hijack an Algerian airliner during a domestic
flight but was overpowered by the crew.
