Summary:Polish President Lech Walesa, trailing badly in opinion polls just months before, stormed back against his ex-communist rival in a first round of elections on November 5 and stood a fighting chance of winning a second term. A sample of final official results from 1,000 polling stations showed Walesa with 33.3 per cent of the vote, narrowly behind 34.9 per cent for Aleksander Kwasniewski, leader of the ruling Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) party.
