Summary:Oil from a stricken supertanker floundering off South Wales continued to leak onto the coast on February 18 leaving a black smudge along the beach. Up to 6,000 tonnes of oil have been estimated to have leaked from the tanker, the Sea Empress and large oil slicks, around one-and-a-half miles (2.5 km) long, were seen along the coast. Salvage experts struggled against rough seas and galeforce winds to avert further environmental disaster.
