- Story Text: Army and civilian engineers worked frantically on Wednesday to pug two beaches in the embankment of the Gomati River, which has already flooded the city of Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state.
Officials in Lucknow said the river was running six feet (about two metres) above the danger mark, and the rains were making matters worse. The river flows through Lucknow before later reaching the Ganges.
Water three or four feet (1 to 1.2 metres) deep was flowing through the main shopping area and some fashionable residential areas in the city, which has a population of 650,000. This film, shot on Tuesday, shows business and residential areas seriously flooded.
SYNOPSIS: Army and civilian engineers worked frantically on Wednesday to plug two breaches in the embankment of the Gomati river, which has already flooded the city of Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state.
Officials in Lucknow said the river was running six feet (about two metres) above the danger mark, and the rains were making matters worse.
Water three or four feet (one to 1.2 metres) deep was flowing through the main shopping area and some fashionable residential areas in the city, which has a population of about 650,000.
The officials said backflow from sewers and waters from a natural lake near the river were also posing problems. At least 13 death due to drowning were reported from Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, taking the death toll in two months of rains and flooding in the state to 268. In Lucknow itself a quarter of the city's area was under two to four feet (0.7 to 1.4 metres) of Water on Wednesday.
Floodwater also inundated Lucknow Zoo. Some of the animals had to be placed on raised platforms in their paddocks to keep them above the water-line. Water was being kept back from the lion house by an emergency all of sandbags and boulders. PAUSE On Wednesday officials said more than 25,000 people had been evacuated from the city in the last 24 hours. They were being housed in 18 camps opened by the state Government.
