- Title: Russia: Revolution
- Date: 1st November 1917
- Summary: Following the abdication of Tsar Nicolas II in March 1917 he was replaced by a government of liberals and moderate revolutionaries, the Mensheviks. This government survived only eight months before falling to the Bolsheviks. Bolshevik Leader Vladimir Ilyich Lenin returned in secret from exile and began organising his militant revolutionary supporters. In November (October in the Julian calendar - see 'Footnote') the Bolsheviks seized power. The Tsar and his family were imprisoned by the Bolsheviks and later assassinated, Footnote: Until the revolution Russia used the 'Julian Calendar' while the majority of the world used the 'Gregorian Calendar' which, in 1917 varied by 13 days. After the revolution the Gregorian Calendar was adopted in Russia - this explains why the revolution culminating on 25 October is celebrated on 7 November. NOTE: Date is approximate.
