- Story Text: Eight U.S. tourists were killed and 21 injured when their coach hit a stationary truck in southern Egypt, the state news agency MENA said on Sunday (December 26).
The bus driver and a tour guide were also hurt.
The coach hit the parked truck on a road near Abu Simbel, the site of two temples dating from the time of Ramses II, MENA said.
The injured were initially taken to a military hospital where they were treated for fractures and cuts, before being transported to Cairo.
Dr. Bahaa Abu Zied said those that had been admitted to the Nasser Institute Hospital so far were mostly in a stable condition.
"We have received twelve cases, arrived since one hour. There are two cases needs to be admitted in the ICU [intensive care unit], both cases have been managed, and they are critically stable, they are fully conscious, and no problem for them. We are waiting to complete our investigation, and surgical intervention. The other ten cases have been examined by our medical team and they are stable," he said.
Reckless driving, lax traffic rules and poor road conditions cause many road crashes in Egypt. A series of fatal road and rail accidents in recent years triggered a public outcry over the government's handling of road and transport safety. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
