- Story Text: Fourteen people -- including four Americans, a Japanese and British national -- were killed when their small plane crashed in bad weather in Nepal on Tuesday (August 24).
The Nepalese carrier, Agni Air, plane, returning to Kathmandu after failing to land in Lukla in eastern Nepal because of bad weather, crashed near the outskirts of the capital.
Lukla is the gateway to Mount Everest.
Nepal's government has formed an investigation commission to probe the cause of the crash and asked it to report within 65 days.
"The government of Nepal and myself are very grief stricken by this sad accident. I want to console the families of the victims. The Nepal government will do everything it can to rectify any lapses that might have caused such a crash and to make sure it doesn't occur again," Nepal's prime minister, Madhab Nepal, said after meeting grieving relatives at Tribhuvan Airport in Kathmandu.
The U.S. embassy in Kathmandu confirmed the death of its nationals and said it was ready to assist Nepal as needed.
"It's a very sad thing. It's a tragic accident. We appreciate the fact that the government of Nepal has responded as quickly as they can as we all seek to help our families to deal with it," US Ambassador to Nepal, Scott DeLisi said.
The plane, a German-made Dornier, had five Nepali passengers and a crew of three.
