Summary:Following the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 counter-revolutionary forces swept into action. The so-called 'Whites' were locked in battle with the newly organised Red Army. Large numbers of foreign troops had also arrived, citing a desire to stop war supplies falling into German hands as the reason for the intervention. The Allies had been hostile towards the Soviets for making a separate peace with Germany and soon joined forces with the Whites. The civil war continued for two years until finally the Red Army proved military superior. NOTE: Date is approximate.
