- Story Text: Actor Christian Bale walked the black carpet for the Hollywood premiere of his latest film "Teminator Salvation." Co-stars Sam Worthingtonand Bryce Dallas Howard, along with the director McG were also on hand to talk to the press at the unveiling of the first big movie of the summer.
"Terminator Salvation" opens across North America on May 21. The film will then open in the U.K. on June 3, and in Australia on June 4.
Welsh-born actor Christian Bale walked the black carpet for the Hollywood premiere of his latest film "Teminator Salvation" Thursday (May 14) night.
Australian actor Sam Worthington, actress Bryce Dallas Howard, and director McG were also on hand to talk to the press at the unveiling of the first big movie of the summer.
The highly-anticipated film is the latest installment of a highly popular film franchise begun 25 years ago.
As the larger-than-life story unfolds, it is revealed that modern civilization has been destroyed by nuclear bombs launched by the artificial intelligence network known as Skynet.
The science fiction adventure presents a post-apocalyptic world in which humans are mercilessly hunted by ominous machines known as Terminators.
In the wake of this catastrophic global destruction, an army of Terminators roams the world collecting survivors for research or killing them on the spot.
Bale plays the leader of the human resistance movement, John Connor.
Howard was cast as his pregnant wife, Kate.
Worthington portrays an unlikely hero named Marcus Wright, a stranger from the past with an uncertain agenda.
The movie is the fourth film in the Terminator franchise series, and is considered both a sequel and a prequel to the previous films.
Director McG first started talking to Bale about playing the a leading role while the actor was still working on "The Dark Knight."
Although a fan of the "Terminator" films, Bale was at first uninterested, until McG convinced him the story would be character-based and not rely on special effects.
"Hey, you know, I mean, I question that, the need for any movie to be made," said the 35-year-old actor. "It always sounds a little pompous when people start talking about the importance, how important it is to get them made. But, I was just, I was just kind of feeling like probably the mythology was done and, you know, if it was something for a quick bit of cash from the owners of the rights. I wasn't interested. But I think we ended up with a script of a post-Judgment Day world, which is really something quite new. And I loved the mythology myself, and I just really got excited by the idea to be able to re-create that, and revive it. And we'll see if the audience embraces it, because it's all about that. A movie like this is all about the audience and the collective feeling of excitement in watching a movie like this. It's a roller coaster ride."
Bale was born in Wales to South African and English parents.
He first caught the public eye when he was cast in the starring role of Steven Spielbarg's "Empire of the Sun."
His more recent film credits include "American Psycho,"
"Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight," and "3:10 to Yuma."
Worthington, 32, shared why audiences everywhere will enjoy the science fiction adventure.
"Everyone went from 'Terminator 1' wanting to see the machines try to obliterate the humans. It was touched upon briefy in Jim's movies.
We've expanded that world. It's visceral, it's exciting. And it's a summer popcorn movie. You want to get your twelve bucks worth!"
"Terminator" creator James Cameron and actor Russell Crowe both recommended Worthington for the film.
Worthington was one of several actors who was under consideration to take over the role of James Bond from Pierce Brosnan for the 2006 film "Casino Royale."
28-year-old Howard explained why she admired the director for his unique approach on set.
"I mean McG is so obsessed with character. That's the most important thing to him. And I think one of the ways in which he did that, and supported that is because he's so collaborative with his actors. Which is very rare. I mean, doesn't happen very often. And it's dangerous. And what-- it's dangerous because then sometimes you'll just get actors being unruly and trying to take over the set. But he's such a precise, focused, extraordinary filmmaker that he can do that with a lot of safety. So, it was great."
Howard is the daughter of actor-turned-director Ron Howard.
She is best known for her roles in the films "The Village,"
"Lady in the Water," and "Spider-Man 3."
Meanwhile, McG credited Howard's father for inspiring him.
"My whole idea of collaboration comes from Ron Howard, Bryce's father, who talks about how being a director means taking a great many voices and doing a lot of listening. And, ultimately synthesizing them into your vision. And that was certainly my intention. I'm very clear in the film I wanted to make. And I'm happy with the way it turned out. So I owe her dad a great deal of debt in that respect."
Actress Moon Bloodgood, 33, plays a female fighter pilot.
Bloodgood was born to an American father of Dutch and Irish descent, and a South Korean mother.
