- Story Text: Parts of the film - an adaptation of Dan Brown's best-selling novel "Angels and Demons" - were shot at CERN, a central laboratory for antimatter research.
In a statement released on Thursday, when Angels & Demons stars Tom Hanks and Ayelet Zurer visited the research centre, CERN said its work with antimatter could help solve scientific mysteries and unlock treatments for disease such as cancer.
Cosmologists believe that when the universe was born 13.7 billion years ago, in a collision known as the Big Bang, matter and antimatter were created in equal quantities.
While most of Angels & Demons was shot in Rome, the opening sequence includes images inside CERN's Large Hadron Collider, which Gillies described as "more visually spectacular" than the Antiproton Decelerator complex.
The filming took place last year, before the 27-km (17-mile) tunnel was sealed to begin experiments on the smallest building blocks of matter, which triggered widespread public concerns about a potential replication of the "Big Bang.
Tom Hanks, Ron Howard and Ayelet Zurer came on a promotional visit for the film, to be released world-wide on 15 May 2009.
In the film directed by Ron Howard, Tom Hanks takes up his role as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon - already held in "Da Vinci Code".
After the murder of a physicist, Leonardo Vetra, Professor Langdon and Vetra's daughter Vittoria (Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer) find themselves on an adventure to find The Illuminati, a secret and powerful brotherhood. Clues lead them around the Vatican and the four alters of science: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. An assassin working for the Illuminati has captured four cardinals and painfully murders them. In their investigation, Robert and Vittoria search for a new, very destructive weapon that could kill millions. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
