- Story Text: Thousands of fans flocked to Frankfurt to hear American popstar Mariah Carey give her first concert in Germany on Friday (June 14).
The venue was packed out for the sell-out gig and some fans desperate to catch a glimpse of their idol paid up to 1,000 marks (560 U.S. dollars) for a ticket on the black market.
Since her 1990 debut, Carey has sold more than 80 million records worldwide. She has had 11 number-one hits in the U.S. and has received sixteen Grammy nominations and won two Grammy Awards.
Carey also holds the record for the longest stay at the top of the pops for her duet "One Sweet Day" with the group Boyz II Men.
As well as old favourites like "Vision of Love" and "Emotion", Mariah Carey also played several numbers from her Grammy-nominated album "Daydream".
At a news conference after the concert, Carey explained she's not an artist who can perform a series of consecutive shows.
"I really have to take care of my voice and what I usually do after I sing is not talk the next day," she said.
"Obviously I'm not doing that today...the show is so demanding on me vocally. People do a big tour night after night. I can't do that. I won't put that much stress on my voice." The Frankfurt gig was the start of Carey's European tour but she will only hold three more concerts -- in the Netherlands on June 17, Paris on June 20 and Britain on June 23. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
