- Story Text: US-actor Kevin James introduced his latest franchise "Paul Blart- Mall Cop" in Berlin on Friday (March 20).
"Mall Cop," which stars James as a bumbling shopping mall security guard who takes on a gang of high-tech crooks. The Paul Blart character he developed with his friend and producer of the movie, Adam Sandler.
"We got together, he thought that I should do a movie on my own so I brought him this idea and he was just really supportive, he loved it right away" James told Reuters about how "Cop" came about in cooperation with Sandler. "And he made it happen, really. He was the guy that helped out during the whole process, you know, he helped me with the editing and putting great songs in the movie. He is just invaluable."
"Paul Blart: Mall Cop" captured the top spot at the North American box office in January, beating back a challenge by the vampires and werewolves of "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans." "Cop" sold an estimated $21.5 million in tickets over the opening weekend and taken in a strong total of $64.8 million in two weeks, according to distributor Columbia Pictures. James says that some of the appeal oft the movie comes from the fact that is is not filled with model-like characters- including himself and his heavyweight appearance. "It was more ore less just us picking regular people and that's the way I am at the moment and I just wanted to have fun with that and, you know, not take everything so seriously" said James.
"I don't think everything has to have a message, it's just kind of nice not to see perfectly fit, everybody's in shape, cookie-cutter people all the time."
James, the star of the sitcom "The King of Queens," also co-wrote and co-produced "Mall Cop," which was made for a modest $26 million and has become a major box office hit despite taking a drubbing from critics. James said despite being quite the comedian he was not opposed to playing serious roles, either: "It depends where the story takes me.
Right now, I am doing comedy, but if there was a serious role... It's not like I am looking to do serious roles, so I can say oooh, I can do serious, too. I just like stories and working with good people. If it's a good director or a great actor I want to work with, then I'll change directions. I don't continually want to do the same thing, but I love making people laugh." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
