- Story Text: The so-called "President and First Lady of Country", George Jones and Tammy Wynette, have begun a European tour to promote their new album, "One".
Jones and Wynette had not sung on stage together for many years.
Their collaboration began on a personal level when they were married in 1969. Both were already country music stars in their own right, and their romantic union was soon followed by a professional partnership in 1972 with their first album together, "Me and the First Lady".
The pair soon became one of country music's top concert draws in the early seventies, but their personal relationship soon started to turn sour. According to Wynette's 1979 autobiography, Jones used to beat her when he got drunk, which was a common occurrence. In the book, "Stand by Your Man", Wynette tells how she sometimes had to wear heavy makeup to hide facial bruises when Jones hit her.
Jones and Wynette divorced in 1975, and their joint stage appearances ceased in 1980. Then last June, they ended the hiatus when they performed together at the Nashville Fan Fair to promote the American release of their new album, "One".
Asked how it feels to be working with her ex-husband again, Wynette said, "We can now laugh about the things that used to make us so angry, now we don't have to go home and fuss and fight".
Jones and Wynette will be performing in Dublin on September 21, and at the Gstaad Festival on September 22 and 23. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
