- Story Text: Double Oscar winner Tom Hanks went on a walkabout in London's West End on Wednesday (September 6) as he launched "Apollo 13".
The Hollywood star was attending the charity premiere of his latest movie blockbuster directed by Ron Howard, which tells the true story of how three astronauts faced near death in space after their rocket ruptured an oxygen tank.
The screening was in aid of Turning Point, the largest British charity for people with drink, drug and mental health problems. Its patron, the Princess of Wales, will attend a private showing of the film on Thursday night (September 7).
As Hanks arrived at the premiere, he took a short stroll among the 10,000 fans who had assembled outside the cinema.
The crowds were delighted and cheered loudly for the man who won consecutive best actor Oscars for "Philadelphia" in which he played an aids-stricken lawyer and "Forrest Gump" as the simpleton who won the heart of a nation.
Hanks is one of the film world's most sought-after actors and can command up to 10 million U.S. dollars a film.
Hanks said that preparation for the role was quite arduous.
Training included a stint at NASA's space camp in Atlanta learning the workings of close to 500 spacecraft controls, and getting used to facing G-forces. Some sequences were filmed inside NASA's specially-designed aircraft, which simulates weightlessness. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
