- Story Text: The biggest-grossing film of the summer,"Independence Day", had its star-studded London premiere on Tuesday (August 6).
The film, already one of the most hyped in history, shows aliens launching a devastating attack on the United States.
The movie's United Kingdom premiere attracted dozens of stars and several thousand screaming fans to London's Leicester Square cinema district.
Among the big names at Tuesday's premiere were the film's leading men, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman.
"Independence Day" has taken a staggering 250 million dollars at the U.S. box office and is on course to eclipse Jurassic Park as one of the decade's biggest money spinners.
The film has taken an extra 33 million dollars in 14 markets outside the U.S.
"Independence Day" tells the story of the United States president and a gifted scientist who formulate a plan to beat a massive alien invasion which destroys cities across the United States.
Goldblum plays the scientist fighting the aliens.
"It's a stirring story about people banding together. It's jam-packed with entertainment and I've seen audiences go nuts over it. Cinemas have been like rock concerts," Goldblum said at the London premiere.
Pullman, who plays the victorious U.S. President, sat next to the current incumbent, Bill Clinton, when the film was given a special screening at the White House.
"I couldn't keep staring at him to see if he was getting the story. But it was nice to sit next to him and afterwards he was very complimentary," Pullman said.
"It's nice to have the pres give our movie a plug." Aliens also made an appearance at the film's post-premiere party -- but these were safely contained in glass cases. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
