- Story Text: Buddah Records has dug lost recordings out of the BMG vault and repaired some classic live music as well as studio material and released it to the public.
Buddah Records, a division of music giant BMG was recently created to go deep into the vast colletion of RCA, RCA Victor, Arista and other legendary record labels. The label's mission is to repair, restore and re-release music that would not be available without extraordianary technical detail, computer enhancement and painstaking work.
The label has already released material that has not been heard in as much as 60 years. One of those recordings is a one-time radio broadcast featuring Frank Sinatra singing with the Tommy Doresy band.A recording was made of the concert and left in a vault until just recently.
Not unlike many of the Buddah re-releases, the Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra recording was in terrible shape and in need of major repair.
Glen Korman, Director of the BMG Archives descibed some of the sophisticated and not so sophisticated work that went into bringing the recording to public today, "We reconstructed it, really with scotch tape and glue and all the tricks, the silly little tricks we have and now after the digital clean-up process it really is kind of a perfect thing the recording itself to begin with is really wonderful recording if you can actually get to it."
Buddah Records "Stop Time" series delivers a number of rare unreleased recordings from such old time greats as Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Louis Prima, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman. All the recordings have the annoying hisses, crackles and pops that usually are associated with vintage recordings digitally removed.
Alex Miller, the President of Buddah Records described the process of bringing old recordings to the digital era, "The ability to find an old analog recording that's recorded on a flat disk and take that and transfer it to digital audio tape and to look at it on a computer screen and see where the noise is and where the natural sound is and we really peel off the noise in order to get to the essence of the natural sound itself."
Buddah Records has just released the 25th anniversary edition Harry Nilsson's legendary album, "Pussycats", with four additional tracks. The album produced in 1974 by John Lennon during his famous lost weekend features Nilsson originals as well as a few covers.Among the famed musicains that appear on "Pussycats" are, Keith Moon, Ringo Starr and of course, John Lennon.
The four additional tracks were discovered amongst dozens of old tapes found in the BMG archives. These tapes needed to go through a process that included baking them in confectionary ovens to get the actual music off of them.
Buddah Records will also release CD's of music from well known artists including a solo album from Darryl Hall made prior to his famed ventures with John Oates and an early release from Grahm Parker.
Cult hero, Captain Beefheart with his unique mix of blues, rock and psychedelia also had music deep in the BMG vaults that has been pulled out as part of Buddah Records "Original Masters" series.
Alex Miller knew that more Captain Beefheart was buried in the vault, "As a fan, I knew there had to be more material that was available so we worked with the BMG archives group and we went back to over a hundred reels of master recordings."
Buddah records also has released mixes of dance tracks, sci-fi music, a Henry Mancini CD of music he created for the television show "Peter Gunn". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
