- Story Text: Chart-topping band the Spice Girls switched on London's Christmas lights in Oxford Street to celebrate the launch of their debut album "Spice".
The five singers - who have hit British number one with both their singles so far - made their appearance before a party to launch the album, which is tipped by many to shoot to the top of the British charts by Christmas.
About 5,000 fans squealed their delight as Melanie B, Geri, Emma, Victoria and Melanie C, scampered out of their limousines in front of the crowd barriers.
Radio disc jockey Neil Fox, compered the switch-on.
The Spice Girls, unknown nine months ago, have shot to fame as the hottest pop phenomenon at home and in many other countries.
Their first single Wannabe -- which sold more than a million copies in the United Kingdom alone -- hit number one in 27 countries.
Their second single - Say You'll Be There - followed the first straight to the top of the singles chart.
Ahead of more established stars, they were top choice of the Oxford Street Association to kick off the Christmas shopping season.
Oxford Street was closed for the ceremony, and police pleaded with young fans to keep back from the crowd barriers to avoid a crush. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
