- Story Text: Award winning Spanish film director Pilar Miro declared her period drama "The Dog in the Manger" (El Perro del Hortelano) as relevant to contemporary audiences as to those more than 400 years ago.
..quote Miro's film adaptation of Felix Lope De Vega's court play of intrigue and jealousy clinched the best film award at Argentina's annual international Mar Del Plata film festival (Festival Internacional de Cine). The two-week festival ended on November 17.
Speaking at the London Film Festival, Miro said the award was particularly welcome for her and Spanish cinema as a whole. "It means more to Spanish and European films than it does than say, American films," she told Reuters Television.
An oppulent costume drama adapted from the work 17th century Spanish Baroque playwright Lope de Vega "The Dog in the Manger" is a spirited comedy about a single-minded noble woman who follows her heart and not the constricting class rules of her day as she woos a lowly attendant.
Having taken a fancy to her secretary, Teodoro (Carmelo gomez, young beauty Countess Diana of Belflor (Emma Suarez) is alarmed to learn of his engagement to one of her maids (Ana Duato).
She intervenes to separate them by steering Marcela's affections to another court dandy, Fabio (Miguel Rellan) and Teodoro's affections in her own direction.
While the extent of her designs on him wavers uncertainly, Diana's attentiveness to Teodoro nonetheless provokes jealousy from her noblement suitors. They enlist the upstart's resourceful confidant Tristan (Fernando Conde) to bump him off. But he hatches a plot to pass Teodoro off as the long-lost son of an ailing count (Rafael Alonso), thus elevating his friend to Diana's level.
"Diana quote" Miro's dour thriller "Your Name Poisons My Dreams" featured in November's San Sebastian festival in Spain. An acclaimed director, she won a Oso de Plata (Silver Bear) award for her film "Beltenbros"" in 1992.
