- Story Text: Its name is synonymous
with glamour.
Monaco, the tiny principality in the south of France, is where the beautiful
people come to play and that's what they did last week for the annual World
Music Awards.
For two days, the world's rock and pop royalty rubbed shoulders with Monaco's
real-life royalty -- Prince Albert and Princess Stephanie.
A one-time wannabe pop star herself, Princess Stephanie hosted the awards with
the help of American rocker Jon Bon Jovi and actress Halle Berry.
The awards attracted some of the year's hottest artists, like the Fugees, to one
of the music world's bigggest legends -- the Bee Gees.As well as music stars,
there was also a bevy of supermodels.
Eva Herzigova arrived with her husband, Bon Jovi drummer Rico Torres.
Models Carla Bruni, Helena Christiansen and Tyra Banks also were there to add
some serious glamour.
The most awards on the night went to The Fugees. In all, the Fugees won five
awards including the world's best selling pop group, world's best selling R&B
group, best selling rap group and over-all best selling group and best selling
American group.
Celine Dion also proved a hit, receiving the world's best-selling pop artist and
the overall best-selling artist awards.
The annual event, which is broadcast worldwide to millions of viewers, seeks to
honour artists who have succeeded in crossing cultural barriers to reach a
worldwide audience.
Amongst those attending this year's event were the big winners, Celine Dion and
The Fugees, the Bee Gees, Lionel Richie, Julio Iglesias, Robert Miles, Los Del
Rio, Roberta Flack, Algerian singer Khaled and actress Ursual Andress.
The Bee Gees added another Lifetime Achievement award to the one they won at the
Brit Awards in London earlier this year.
Lionel Richie was also honoured for his work.He won an award for his long life
contribution to the pop music industry.
Like the Bee Gees, Richie has recently enjoyed a career renaissance with a new
album out this year.
One of the highlights of the night was an impromptu boogie by Prince Albert.
Monaco's heir apparant joined Los Del Rio (winners of World's Best Latin Group)
when they sang last year's massive dancefloor hit "Macarena". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
