- Story Text: His last film "The Glimmer Man" disappeared almost without a trace.
This time, action star Steven Seagal's latest effort "Fire Down Below" ruled the American box office after its opening weekend.
Seagal plays Environmental Protection Agency Marshal Jack Taggart, a man who has set out on assignment to avenge the killing of a trusted colleague.
Following the murdered agent's trail, Taggart travels through the tiny hamlets that dot the hills of Tennessee and Kentucky to expose the people responsible for dumping hazardous waste.
Working undercover as a carpenter, Taggart gets involved in the lives of the townspeople whose health is at risk from chemicals dumped by mining tycoon Orin Hanner, played by Kris Kristofferson.
During his inquiry, Taggart also meets and romances Sarah Kellogg, played by "Species" star Marge Helgenberger. Together, they struggle to prevent an ecological catastrophe that will turn Appalachia into an uninhabitable wasteland.
Seagal is no stranger to environmental causes. He has long lent his celebrity power to charities and organizations fighting to save the environment.
As a producer, this is his second action film with an ecological message. The other was "On Deadly Ground," which he also directed and acted in with Michael Caine.
Other cast members in "Fire Down Below" include Harry Dean Stanton and musicians Randy Travis, Travis Tritt and Marty Stuart.
Seagal also got a chance to show off his musical talents. The star played guitar with some of America's country music greats in the film, including Billy Ray Cyrus.
"Fire Down Below" had its world premiere in Nashville, Tennessee on September 4, followed by a party at which Seagal again took out his guitar and performed for the crowd. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
