  • Story Text: George Clooney and Nicole Kidman have teamed up in the first feature film from the new Dreamworks studio, called "The Peacemaker." Clooney mingled with his "ER" co-stars at the nuclear thriller's Los Angeles premiere last week (September 23).

    Kidman plays Dr Julia Kelly, a nuclear scientist and head of the White House Nuclear Smuggling Group. Clooney plays Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Devoe, an intelligence officer with U.S. Army Special Forces.

    They're brought together when nine nuclear warheads are stolen from the former Soviet Union.

    The pursuit of the hijacked cargo ultimately leads the two Americans back to their own homeland, tracking an unlikely terrorist who is driven by the most tragic and personal of agendas.

    Kelly and Devoe must orchestrate a complex, large-scale manhunt through New York City to catch the terrorist, a former Yugoslav diplomat, before he can attack the United Nations building.

    The diplomat, Dusan Gavrich, believes his country was destroyed by Western indifference to the suffering in the Balkans.

    Gavrich is played by Romanian actor Marcel Iures, a star in his native country.

    "The Peacemaker" is directed by Mimi Leder, who makes her feature film directorial debut after being honoured with two Emmy Awards for her directing work on Clooney's top-rated television show "ER." Leder was personally chosen for this job by Steven Spielberg, one of the heads of Dreamworks.

    Spielberg was joined by David Geffen and former Disney chief Jeffrey Katzenberg three years ago to form the first new Hollywood studio in 60 years.

    Besides the film division, the company also includes a record label, a television unit and an animation division.

    In fact, the release of Dreamworks' first film came one year behind schedule. When the company was launched, the three chiefs set the autumn of 1996 as their goal for their first release.

    Geffen and Katzenberg were at the LA premiere. The film opens in Britain on October 24.
