- Story Text: A new contemporary production by the Dutch National ballet has married the unlikely duo of rock'n'roll and classical dance.
This unusual combination is currently what's on offer from the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam, in the form of British choreographer, Christopher Bruce's "Rooster".
Created in 1991, "Rooster" uses eight classic Rolling Stones' tracks from the second half of the 1960s. Two of them - "Little Red Rooster" and "Not Fade Away" - are cover versions, the rest were written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
The ballet features ten dancers, five men and five women, performing what Bruce describes as a kind of battle, a ping-pong game between the sexes.
The title, "Rooster", reflects the strutting cock attitude which Bruce sees as typical of the 60's man.
Bruce says that although the piece has a serious theme, on the whole, it is meant to be fun.
Principal male lead, Robert Bell said the dancers just have fun, "flirting around" on stage.
The ballet has a limited two week run in Amsterdam, before transferring to Rotterdam. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
