- Story Text: After gaining worldwide recognition for his role in the hit television series "The X-Files," David Duchovny is making the leap back to the big screen in the crime thriller "Playing God." Duchovny plays Los Angeles surgeon Dr Eugene Sands, a man who was stripped of his medical license after performing an operation while high on drugs.
But his life changes when he hooks up with a ruthless criminal, Raymond Blossom, played by Timothy Hutton, and becomes his own personal "gunshot doctor." His new job is to treat associates of Blossom's who cannot risk visiting a hospital.
Lured deeper and deeper into the dangerous underworld and growing too close to Raymond's seductive girlfriend Claire, played by Angelina Jolie, Eugene is faced with his most challenging decision -- to continue a life on the run or face his demons and regain control of his destiny.
The film is directed by British filmmaker Andy Wilson, who made a name for himself in the U.K. by directing installments of the popular series "Cracker." Duchovny says he was drawn to the film because the character was so far removed from the character he plays on "The X-Files." To prepare for the part in the film, he watched some surgery, including a brain surgery and a leg operation.
Duchovny started out studying for a Master's Degree in English Literature at Yale University. He was in pursuit of a PhD when he changed gears and started acting.
Duchovny was recently nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for the X-Files. Prior to that, he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series.
Although "Playing God" is his first leading role in a feature film, it isn't his first time on the big screen. He previously had smaller roles in the Brad Pitt film "Kalifornia," Sir Richard Attenborough's "Chaplin," and "Beethoven" with Charles Grodin and a big Saint Bernard.
Coming up next for the actor is another starring role in a full-length film version of "The X-Files" television show. It's due in theatres in the United States next summer. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
