Summary:Thousands of people joined a demonstration in Rome in protest of the 1997 austerity budget. A protest march through Rome, organised by the centre-right opposition, attracted some 300,000 people on November 9 to protest against budget cuts.The budget, of Centre-left Prime Minister Romano Prodi, aims to slash 41 billion US dollars from the deficit next year to meet the level needed for membership of the EU economic and monetary union.
